Backyard Brains' "Robo Roach" toy encourages children to mutilate real roaches and control them with their phones like remote controlled cars.
The toy's instructions tell children to anesthetize a roach in cold water, scratch off its protective waxy coating, poke a needle behind the insect's head and then attach an electrode that connects with a smartphone to control the live animal's movements.
Though cockroaches don't top the list of people's favorite animals, the toy nevertheless encourages sadistic behavior that may desensitize children to cruelty towards other animals. And despite roaches' bad reputation, they are living beings that do not deserve manipulation and torture.
